I enjoyed this project because I was able to spend a lot of time digging deep into how I feel and who I am. I chose to paint my whole canvas a teal or light blue as it’s one of my favorite colors. As for the portrait itself, it has multiple layers. First with I started with bold lines with a china marker. Then I went ahead and used acrylic paints and then I went back and used oil pastel. I wanted to make sure that each time I added a layer I was leaving some of the previous layers visible. I did this to show the many layers to my character. The face is expressionless and somewhat distant because honestly at the moment in a global pandemic that’s how I feel. I also tried to juxtapose both organic lines for the face as well as geometric rough lines for the rest. This was because I see myself as having two distinct sides. One for my professional life and a warmer more inviting personal side. The piece is intentionally a bit rough and messy because at this current stage of my life. There is a lot happening in my life and it’s sometimes hard to keep everything together. I added a helmet with antennas because my mind that simply can’t stop. It’s also a way I wanted to depict my ADD which has me in-tuned to a million and one things at once. The big red exclamation marks and question marks are there to signify all the questions both rational and irrational. I’m a firm believer in questioning everything as one of the best ways of learning information.
My partner is Adriene O. and we spoke about our lives currently. We went on to speaking about how we like listening to music and it is a big part of our lives. As you can see here on my work I drew some music notes at the ends of her hair. I thought it was creative so I went on to put those as her ends. I drew some coins around her face because she likes to play video games. For example subway surfers was one of the games she mentioned so I drew stars between the coins because that’s how they look like in the game. I made a sunflower for her ears because I got the feeling she likes good weather and the colors of the setting made me think of a warm setting. I also made ice cones for her eyes she enjoys eating ice cream a lot. As for myself I began using shapes to try and define my facial features and hair. I drew a sun and a moon it represents something important to me in my life. It’s something my aunt gave me I have a sun and she has a moon. My aunt is a very special person in my life and that means a lot to me. I included music notes around my setting because everywhere I am I sing in my mind and I’m always thinking of new ideas about music.
My partner is Selene. We spoke about our hobbies, shared some stories and our cultural background. She mentioned she loves photography, so I painted a camera lens as her eye. Her family is from Jamaica so I incorporated the Jamaican flag as the background. I used different shapes and colors to describe her creative personality.
My partner was Steven Ynoa. There were a few things that we spoke about. A lot of it was about where we were at in our lives and how we were doing. However, I learned that he loves music and I feel like it was about the old Spanish street music. This is why I included musical notes all throughout the portrait. Also, he likes Anime and sometimes playing games. This is why I decided to make the eyes I drew have a zig-zag and triangle in the circle because it pointed out the need to break away from something and drift off into another space. I then used the Flash symbol to represent his nose because he like the show as well.
The above painting is my abstract portrait of Deirdre Washington. Although incomplete, in this painting the bright colors represents Deirdre’s love for the bright colors and a proud sneaker fan. She also likes to be out in the day time and her favorite shape is circles. Her most common motto, “Are you serious”, and a representation of her beautiful locks are also exhibited.
This is my partner Harry Chen. In this painting, I used geometric shapes because he appears to me as a tidy person, the straight line looks clean and neat. I use the color blue as a background because he often seems quiet and calm, and also he mentioned he likes blue. On the right lower corner you can see it is a computer. The logo on the computer is actually a logo of one of the games he plays, and I use red on the logo because he is passionate about video games. The same thing applies to the pencil on the top right corner, he likes to draw. I also use blue for the screen of the computer and purple for the stand because he looks like a tech guy to me, who has rich knowledge about computers. For his face, I used the colors yellow and green because I think he is a relaxed and gentle person.
This is my partner Haowei Wu. For my painting, I used a geometric structure to represent how he looks and what he enjoys to do. On the top right of the painting, I created the Flag of China to represent where he is from. I used yellow to show joy and happiness as he does not like being bored. I painted a T.V and a logo of the game he plays as his source of entertainment. I implemented a purple/red background because it is a complementary color to yellow and it shows that he likes to be creative. I also drew him a cap because he is always wearing one and colored it blue because it symbolizes calmness and wisdom. Haowei seems like a very chill and smart guy. Blue is also one of his favorite colors.
