COURSE DESCRIPTION
Computer Graphic Design III teaches the creative development of advertisements and graphic design for print media. Students will explore the dialogue between the product/service and the intended target. The development of students’ visual creative skill is emphasized. Students will produce projects which reflect their understanding of the strategy, concepts and skills taught.
The professional approach will be stressed, from rough visualization through computer comps and presentation. The course will take students out of the classroom and into the ad agency, design firm, and global collaborative landscape.
Related skills will be incorporated: design and color, typography, digital imaging including image manipulation. Lab time is necessary for class assignments.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
After this class, students will understand the conceptual process needed to solve any design problem. The projects are designed to give students opportunities acquire the following abilities:
- Research and develop a design concept
- Generate good ideas and communicate them clearly in all parts of the creative expression.
- Refine their conceptual thinking, discernment and the ability to apply the concepts across various media channels.
- Collaborate with teammates to accomplish a strategic/creative campaign.
- Apply a consistent message and design to a print campaign
- Make and revise strategic design decisions based on target market and business objectives.
- Present the consumer benefits of a variety of products
OBJECTIVES:
1. Develop basic skills of writing a body copy and headline creation the copywriter.
2. Broaden/sharpen the conceptualization, idea generation and creative development process.
3. Apply critical thinking to evaluate campaign objectives.
4. Identify a target segment and develop a tailored message.
5 To challenge students to push past the 'mediocre solution' by experimenting.
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE/MATERIALS REQUIREMENTS:
Software: Adobe Photoshop CC licenses will be provided from Touro
(For Zoom sessions) Zoom Desktop Client or App. Sufficient Internet connection to view class online; webcam, or desktop or laptop computer with built-in webcam. iPad/phone for attendance is not acceptable. Students should inform the professor with hardware/Internet issues.
Supplies: USB and/or other external hard drives are strongly recommended.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- Weekly attendance is crucial to passing this course
- Completion of all readings, exercises and homework
- Completion of all projects and exams
- Students are expected to keep up with assignments and class work, and participate in project critiques. Evaluation of student progress is based on the successful and timely completion of a series of exercises, as well as the projects.
- Students must abide by deadlines and completion requirements. Completed independent projects will require comprehension of the material presented in class, technical proficiency and a demonstration of aesthetic development.
- Lab Exercises must be done during class and lab time. Practice Time must be arranged outside of class hours to review topics covered during class time. Students should expect to spend an additional 4 to 8 hours of lab time per week on the computer.
- All course projects must be saved to your computer, and uploaded to a shared Google Drive folder, titled with your FULL NAME. Projects need to be saves as PSD, NOT PDF files, layers unmerged.
- In addition to lab and homework, outside projects will be required for completion by the end of the semester.

Grades will be based on exams, projects, classwork, attendance and class participation. Completed projects will be graded using the following criteria: comprehension of the material, technical proficiency in using tools and techniques, project planning, design concept, execution, quality control, and a demonstration of aesthetic development. Each project deadline must be respected.

Attendance Policy: Students are expected to maintain good attendance throughout the course. Three absences will automatically lower the student grade by one point and each additional absence will lower the grade by an additional point. Lack of attendance may result in a failing grade. Instructors should contact students who miss more than two classes. (Special arrangements must be requested in writing and approved in signature by the professor.)
Make-Up Policy: PROJECTS and HOMEWORK must be turned in on time, otherwise grade will be lowered or no credit will be given for the assignments.
Missed Classes: You are responsible for the activities of each class period. All materials and project briefs will be available on Canvas. Students are expected to check their touro.edu emails every week for announcements from the professor. Students are expected to use Canvas and keep up with weekly assignments.
If you anticipate a scheduling conflict, feel free to submit projects early. If you miss an exam, a makeup exam will be arranged.
