FUN FACTS

Some cool facts about exotic flowers include: the world's largest flower, the Titan Arum, smells like rotting flesh; orchids can produce millions of tiny seeds, making them difficult to grow; the spice saffron comes from crocus flowers; vanilla is derived from a specific type of orchid; and some flowers, like the Bougainvillea, are particularly adept at attracting pollinators.

Snap Dragon Seed Pod/Antirrhinum majus (image at the right) has bright colors and fragrance; if you squeeze the sides of a Snapdragon flower it looks like a dragon’s mouth opening and closing. In ancient times, people believed Snap Dragons held mystical powers, and that growing them in one’s garden would protect one’s home from curses and evil.

Carnivorous flowers: Certain flowers trap insects to digest them as a source of nutrients. Flower hearing: Flowers can actually "hear" the buzzing of bees, which can influence their nectar production.

Heat generation: Some flowers can generate heat to attract pollinators. Orchid diversity: Orchids are known for their incredible variety of shapes and colors, with some species capable of living for hundreds of years

Unlike most flower species, orchids don't have “normal” roots. They usually have either rhizome, tuber, or aerial ones. These blooms have been on this planet for a long time – almost 100 million years! The flowers on orchid plants can survive anywhere between a few hours to 6 months depending on the species.
