ART STYLE POSTER
The function of a poster is to communicate messages that identify, inform or persuade. A poster might advertise a product, inform about an event, identify and promote services, etc. You will have only seconds to attract a viewer’s attention in a crowded environment. Therefore, a good poster should be unique and creative to communicate that message effectively, and of course, to have a professional design.
One of the ways to do that is to create an interesting, unusual and humorous image
THE BASIC TECHNICAL APPROACHES
1. Choosing the painting and incorporating an object, which should have this paining style, into it
2. Incorporating a photo of an object as it is, without modifications.
3. Replacing a part of the painting with another image.
4. Creating a visual reference
5. Combination of some of the above
EXAMPLES
Example 1
Modifying part of a painting - new hair, developed with a painting style: colors and brushstrokes
The hair is incorporated into the very well-known painting by Leonardo da Vinci, Mona Lisa
Pantene Print Add
Caption: Pantene Time Renewal. Restores age-damaged hair.
Example 2
Incorporating a photo into a painting and modifying part of an image
The ad campaign for the French eyewear company KelOptic
Caption: Turning impressionism into hyperrealism.
(With their glasses you to see impressionist paintings clearly)
Example 3
Incorporating a photo (just an idea - it is not an original fresco, but an illustration by Richard Williams)
Classic MAD (MAD is an American humor magazine)
To compare: Leonardo da Vinci, Last Supper
Example 4
Creating a visual reference, Picasso style
Ad for a fitness center in Czech Republic.
To compare: Picasso, Woman Bather on the Beach
Some more examples, good and not so good
YOUR ASSIGNMENT
Create a poster, advertising any product or event using a famous work or art.
- The poster should be image-driven, that is an image should take at least 90% of attention
- The poster should have a product name with pretty small font size.
- You can put there a product small image/photo, but it is optional.
- Try to create a good, catchy caption
- In a very small font size put:
after (artist name)
PROCEDURE:
1. Research:
Browse the sites below, find paintings that you like (as many as you need for the different ideas), save their URLs. (Make sure that you can easily open them in class for discussions)
2. Brainstorm, sketching
Think about what you want to advertise (it is a good idea to find the high-resolution images of objects on the internet as well, but you can do it later)
Make four sketches minimum: do your best to roughly represent the panting, an incorporated image and typography
Sketch example:
3. Work on Comp
Notes:
1. Working with Photoshop you will have to find a high-resolution art piece and develop one or several approaches listed above.
2. If an advertised image is incorporated with the painting style, it has to look like all details organically belong together; therefore, you should use all appropriate Photoshop tools and techniques.
WHERE TO FIND HIGH RESOLUTION IMAGES:
If you are not so familiar with the art history, first just google “famous artwork”. Find the art that you like and then google it with Images>Tools>Size>Large to find a high resolution image.
Good source to choose a painting for your poster is Google Art Project:
Google Art Project (search what you need in a search window at the upper right corner)
By collections
By artists
Painting
Gigapixel images
Another one (moderate resolution images)
If you want to “literally”
visit world famous museums
Warning:
Please do not use such art pieces as: the fresco of Michelangelo Buonarroti “The Creation of Man” (on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel), painting “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo Da Vinci, and similar ones, because they are overused tremendously.
